Belle Tire owner Donald Barnes dies at age 83 – Detroit News and Information – Crain’s Detroit Business.
Donald Barnes Sr., the former owner of Belle Tire who led the company’s growth to a chain of more than 80 stores, died Monday of kidney failure in his Beverly Hills home. He was 83.
Barnes was a Kelly Tire salesman in 1969 before he decided to stop selling tires to Belle Tire and work for the company instead. That year, Barnes bought a stake in the Allen Park-based company, which had opened in 1922.
A decade later, he owned the organization and eventually took Belle Tire from one location and expanded it to 2,000 workers employed at 84 stores in Michigan and northern Ohio.
Belle Tire remains a family-run business with Barnes’ sons Don Barnes Jr. and Robert serving as president and CEO, respectively. Don Barnes III became the third generation of Barnes’ at Belle Tire, becoming operations and marketing manager.
Don Barnes Sr. is survived by his wife, Margaret; three children, Don Jr., Robert and Suzanne; two brothers, Bruce and Bob; and 12 grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church at 32340 Pierce St. in Beverly Hills.
The family asks that any donations be made to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, 9500 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio, 44195.
The Southgate School District still has not provided any details for parents living in Allen Park on how their kids are supposed to get to Davidson Middle or Anderson High School, despite the fact that it’s a several mile walk crossing several major streets. This is a letter I wrote to the Davidson principal. Any reply received will be posted here as a follow up.
I was curious what is expected of a single parent living in Allen Park regarding getting their child to Davidson? It’s a 3.9 mile walk each way, and my work schedule has me leaving the house at 6:30 am every day and not arriving back until 5:00 pm. Any realistic suggestions?

Finding the right ingredients to start a new business was a piece of cake for Chris Nordwall.
Last June, he launched a line of cake-flavored liqueurs under the label Piece of Cake Liqueur Co.
Nordwall said it all began with three friends chatting over cocktails and agreeing that it was time to invest their money into a new liquor brand concept.
“We mixed a couple of different liquors together and came up with a flavor that tasted like chocolate cake,” he said.
Within weeks, a recipe was produced, a company was created and a patent was pursued.
In April, out of approximately 300 entries, Piece of Cake’s Chocolate Cake Liqueur received a silver award in the tasting competition at the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America’s 67th annual Convention and Exposition in Las Vegas in April.
Identity Marketing & Public Relations » Three New Stages, Support Space Under Construction at Allen Park Studio Center.
Facilities Attracting More Interest From Film Industry Leaders
DETROIT, July 26, 2010 – To attract more films and television productions, construction is underway on three new stages, support space and additional office space at the Allen Park Studio Center (APSC), generating significant interest from film industry leaders, city officials announced today.
The first step was the recent pouring of more than 150,000 square feet of concrete for the stage floors.
Several productions have already used the APSC, with more slated to come to the complex in the next year. The new construction, which will not interfere with productions already underway, will add two 20,000-square-foot stages for feature film and television production and one 12,000-square-foot stage for green screen and commercials in a large facility originally built for the auto industry. The complex is also adding 20,000 square feet of production office space and 40,000 square feet of space for film support companies.
The APSC is located at 16630 Southfield Road, south of I-94, in Allen Park. S3 Entertainment Group (S3), a Michigan-based production company and a premier liaison in bringing film productions into the state, has entered into a preliminary long-term agreement with Allen Park to manage operations and production development at the APSC.
With S3 involvement, a number of film industry support businesses have expressed significant interest in locating their support operations at the APSC, including state of the art post production facilities, visual and special effects, grip, electric, and specialty equipment, set design/construction, and insurance/film finance, officials said.
“The Allen Park Studio Center project is evolving into so much more than initially anticipated and is now generating significant interest from the industry,” Allen Park Mayor Gary Burtka said.
“We are thrilled about our partnership with the Allen Park Studio Center,” said Jeff Spilman, managing partner of S3. “We have had great success in making sure productions are satisfied with the resources we have here in Michigan to keep them coming back. With the attention that the city has given to growing this industry, we plan on working together in making the Allen Park Studio Center into the filming destination in the Midwest.”
Existing tenants at the complex include Stautzenberger Institute, Roush Industries, CFS, and Unity Studios/LIMS. While a tenant at the site, Unity Studios is no longer a part of the project’s studio development plan.

District 14
(Ecorse, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, River Rouge and part of Allen Park)
This district features a well-stocked Democratic primary to succeed term-limited Rep. Ed Clemente. Paul Clemente, 47, of Lincoln Park, the incumbent’s cousin, appears to be cashing in on name recognition, but his training as a certified public accountant offers a skill that would be valuable in Lansing. Brittany Guerriero, of Allen Park, is a United Way development officer who is also well grounded in politics and policy. Frank Liberati, 46, of Allen Park is a bakery and deli owner who is on the school board and has served as its president since 2006. Frank Vaslo, 51, of Lincoln Park is also a small business owner and has been his city’s mayor for the last four years.
Among this talented crew, FRANK VASLO brings a record of knowing how to consolidate services and cooperate with neighboring communities. His experience would be a particular asset on an issue — consolidation and/or service sharing — that is essential for Michigan communities to survive in the years ahead.
