ALLEN PARK — A walking path will be constructed around the Leo Paluch senior housing property.
Housing Commissioner Andrew Hill had the idea for the path and the Festivities Commission has offered to pay for it.
The cost will be $17,903.
Construction on the track is expected to start within the next few weeks.
It will be lighted, 6-feet wide and about 1,000 feet in length surrounding the entire property.
Hill said he wants the track not only for the exercise benefits it will provide, but also for the communal aspect of residents coming together outdoors.
He said the Housing Commission has been working with the Wayne County master gardeners program, which has assigned two people to help with the layout of landscaping around the track.
“Over the next three years we’ll be spending $15,000 in raw landscaping and a number of community groups have volunteered to help us plant,” Hill said.
“We’re trying to meet goals and be a good neighbor in the community.”
Hill said that in addition to the walking path there will be “little areas of landscaping” with themed sitting areas, such as a humming bird and butterfly garden, a vegetable garden and a water feature pond. All of the plans will take a few years to fund, he said.
“We’d like to participate in the (Allen Park) garden walk in the next couple of years,” Hill said.
The walking track will be available to all residents who want to use it.
“This is the first time that we have ever been involved with senior housing,” said Councilwomen Beverly Kelley, who is on the Festivities Commission.
The Festivities Commission earns money from beer sales and booth rentals at the street fair. This year members also will set up a beer tent at the Allen Park Fireworks in Champaign Park on July 5.
Kelley said all of the money the commission earns goes back into the community.
It also has given money for scholarships, police dogs, other walking tracks and more.
“Do attend our street fair, because it does help our community,” she said.
