MELVINDALE: Board of Education opts against renewing superintendent’s contract

The News Herald: Breaking news coverage for Southgate, MI.

MELVINDALE — For the second time in two years, the Melvindale-Northern Allen Park school board declined to renew the contract of Supt. Cora Kelly.

After a closed session Monday for Kelly’s evaluation, the vote to renew her contract for an additional year failed.

Her contract expires on June 30, 2010.

The vote for the extension had to be unanimous to pass.

Voting yes were Vice President Deborah Mullins, Secretary Vivian Howard and Trustees Judy Maggard and Anita Rader. President Harriet Bowerman voted no.

Trustee Laura Vela-Wolan was absent and Trustee Joseph Monczunski left the closed session and was not present for the vote.

Calls to Kelly and the board members were not returned by Friday morning.

Last year, despite an approval rating of about 75 percent, the board voted 4-3 to not extend her contract.

Kelly has worked in the district, starting as a teacher, for about 40 years.
