The Ypsilanti High School boys soccer team overcame an early deficit in a rain soaked contest at Allen Park Cabrini Wednesday night, defeating the host Monarchs 2-1 in the first ever soccer match between the schools.

George Pop assisted on the equalizer in the first half, and netted the game-winner in the 60th minute to give the Phoenix (1-0) their first victory of the year.

“It was a good game, both teams played well,” said Ypsilanti coach Carlos Calderon. Despite only having a single sub, Calderon believes his team’s fitness was the difference in the game.

“We felt like we could have played another half,” Calderon said.

Cabrini opened the scoring with a goal in the 14th minute, but Ypsilanti’s Darwin Medrano tied the came with a header off a corner kick from Pop just four minutes later. Pop’s second half winner was also a header, assisted by Szilvetzer Kavetski.

Goalkeeper Kevin Wu made five saves for the Phoenix.
