MELVINDALE –– Denny Howard, an assistant varsity football coach at the high school, was fired from his volunteer position Monday for posting racial fliers in the boys’ locker room.
Head Coach Phil Howard, Denny Howard’s brother, has been allowed to finish the season with the team, and his permanent employment as coach is pending based on an investigation after the season is over.
Phil Howard attended Monday’s Board of education meeting; Denny Howard did not.
Melvindale was 9-0 in the regular season and is scheduled to begin state playoff action Friday.
The fliers were posted Oct. 16 before a game between Melvindale and Wyandotte Roosevelt. Melvindale won 35-0.
