TAYLOR — Monroe High dug itself a hole after two periods in the opening game of the Taylor Invitational hockey tournament Saturday evening.

The Trojans trailed 2-0 and had not played well over the first 30 minutes.

But Monroe came storming back, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the third period to tie the game. Jordan Prewitt then put in the game-winner 51 seconds into overtime to give the Trojans a 4-3 win over Allen Park.

Gary Simmons scored the first two Monroe goals, then set up Mike Durkin with the tying score with 10:03 left in regulation. Kyler Kleindienst assisted on the winner.

“We weren’t really great for the first two periods,” reported Monroe coach Isaac Murphy. “We took it to them in the third period. It was a really exciting, competitive game.”

The 5-5-1 Trojans will play for the tournament championship at 7 tonight at the Taylor Sportsplex.
