Firefighters Return to Work

The nine firefighters who were laid off Monday have returned to work.

City Administrator Eric Waidelich said an agreement between the city and International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1410 was signed. Through concessions, the nine firefighters were brought back.

The Fire Department conceded about $800,000 out of its $3.3 million budget, with concessions in effect until June 30, 2011.

The department’s minimum staffing requirement went from seven to six.

“We don’t love it, but no one loves anything about this economy,” said Craig Hickey, union vice president.

Firefighters also will not be granted overtime, and will work instead with compensatory time.
