Police Chief Named City Public Safety Director

The News Herald: Breaking news coverage for Southgate, MI.

Police Chief Dean Tamsen has been named as the city’s public safety director.

The City Council met in executive session Monday night and unanimously approved the position.

According to the resolution, the change was made to streamline the management of public safety.

His salary and benefits will remain the same, as defined by his contract, the resolution said.

City Administrator Eric Waidelich said all of the administrative and grant-writing functions will be shared between the Police and Fire departments.

“When it comes to budget development, he is going to be doing the overall executive management of both departments,” he said.

Waidelich said the city most likely still will need a fire chief, but the position has not been posted.
