Students at Allen Park Middle School have been evacuated this morning over a possible bomb scare, although police said the evacuation is largely precautionary and no one has been hurt.
Allen Park Police Lt. Dave Williams said the middle school students were sent this morning to Cabrini High School, a Catholic school nearby, as part of “precautionary measures to make sure the kids are safe” after an incident Thursday night in Dearborn Heights.
Dearborn Heights Police Chief Lee Gavin told the Free Press this morning that a man in his mid-50s was arrested at his home in that Downriver suburb after making threats to burn down his house. Police who investigated the threats searched the man’s home and found pipe bombs and bomb-making materials, Gavin said. Those materials were later safely detonated.
During the search of the man’s home, police also found maps of several areas, one of them including the area near the Allen Park middle school, Gavin said. His department notified the Allen Park police as a precaution, and Allen Park police this morning decided to bring in bomb-sniffing dogs to make sure there were no bombs or other devices at the school.

Allen Park — Allen Park Middle School students have returned to their school after they were evacuated earlier today after police in Dearborn Heights found a map of the school at a home where they were disposing of hand-made pipe bombs.
Allen Park Superintendent John Sturock said students returned from Cabrini High School shortly before 11 a.m. after a police sweep of the 950-student building uncovered no problems.
Sturock said police found a map of the middle school at the same home where they were removing explosive devices. He said there was no link between the suspect and the middle school and the map was similar to one given to parents to navigate the building on parent-teacher conference days.
“We always err on the side of caution and kids,” Sturock said.
Allen Park police Lt. Dave Williams said there was no apparent threat to the middle school or its students but they were moved to the Catholic high school as a precaution.
